ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.

INDUCTION OF NEW VICAR.

On Sunday evening last, April 3rd, the Rev. J. T. Steele, M.A., was inducted as vicar of the parochial district of Helensville, by the Yen. Archdeacon Hawkins, L.Th. There was a large congregation. The Archdeacon and vicar-elect were met at the vestry door by the people's warden and members of the vestry, and proceeded up the aisle of the church, when the service of institution was impressively conducted by the Archdeacon. After the ceremony the usual evening service was proceeded with. Archdeacon Hawkins preached an eloquent sermon, taking for his text the following verse : " Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we hava known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more." —(II Corinth., c. 5, v. 16). The speaker emphasised the importance of the spiritual side of the church's work, and dwelt on the necessity at all times of the congregation's prayers for their vicar and his work.

The musical portion of the service was led by a strong choir, under the leadership of Mr H. White, jun., who also presided at the organ.

The new vicar — Rev. J. T. Steele, M.A. —has had about 15 years' experience in Japan at missionary work, and speaks the language of that country fluently. Rev. Steele will be a decided acquisition to the community, and adherents of the church are fortunate in having a gentleman of his learning and ability in their midst. Mrs Steele and family arrived in Helensville during the week.
