BRIDGING THE WAITEMATA

It has been suggested by an Aucklander that the best peace memorial this beauteous city could have would be a bridge across the Waitetnata. Wonder how the Ferry Co. and its shareholders like the idea? The bridge is bound to come, in the fullness of time, but that time is not yet. By the way, apropos of the Ferry Co., I am very pleased that this concern had the good sense to turn down the proposal that the fares to North Shore should be advanced by 2d, and the money so raised devoted to beautifying the beaches of the popular seaside resort, Aucklanders are fond of the trip across the harbour during week-ends and at holiday times, but to levy a tax of 2d on every ferry passenger would have been a fatal mistake, and must have resulted in a greatly reduced boat traffic. The tendency nowadays is to reduce fares, everywhere, and as a rule the lower the fares the bigger the profits.
