"PINCHING" CARGO.
When I passed down Queen Street the other morning a large crowd in front of the window of a big hardware store caused me to pause and find out what was the attraction. It turned out to be several small packing-cases on exhibition, supposed to contain tools and a bench-drill, but which were filled with blocks of wood, bricks, and rocks, and other rubbish which had been adroitly substituted, on the voyage, for the original contents. The thief had evidently gone very delibrately about his work, and had been at considerable pains to do it well, and so as to leave no trace that could lead to detection until the cases were opened up. I don't know what the total value of " pinched" cargo averages yearly in Auckland, but I am quite sure it runs into many hundreds of pounds. And for every thief caught a score escape.
