ACCIDENT AT PAHI.
A PLUCKY RESCUE.
[Special Correspondent.]
An accident that might have proved fatal, had it not been for the prompt action of Mr Charles Smith, chief mate of the s.s Tuirangi, happened at Pahi on Monday evening about 8 o'clock. Mr Frank Jackman, a passenger from Whakapirau, had just landed on the Pahi Wharf, and while bidding good-bye to some friends on the boat stepped backwards off the wharf and fell into the water. The steamer was moving at the time, and, as the unfortunate man was right under the propeller, the engines had to be stopped. There was a strong tide running. With great promptitude Mr Smith jumped off the boat and secured a punt that was on the beach, and with part of an oar rescued the drowning man. First aid was rendered by Mr Phil Turner, Captain Ross, and others. The rescued man was taken to Pahi Hotel, where he received every comfort and attention.
A testimonial, signed by a number of visitors and residents, in recognition of his plucky action, was presented to Mr Smith on the s.s Tuirangi on Tuesday.
