Meeting of returned soldiers to-night. (Thursday) in the Lyric Supper Room at 7.30 p.m., when officers, etc., will be elected.
A bocial will be held in the Star Theatre this (Thursday) evening at 8.30 p.m., and as the proceeds are to assist the newly-formed local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, a good crowd is anticipated.
The big favourite, Bill Hart, in " The Silent Man," the top notch in adventures, at Everybody's (Agricultural Hall) on Saturday next. "The Melbourne Cup," a special film, will be included on the supporting programme.
The regulations prohibiting the attend ance of soldiers at political meetingshave been amended to forbid attendance at such meetings by officers or soldiers of any rank in uniform.
Lyric Pictures announce as a special attraction for Saturday next, Emmy Wehlen in the six-act Metro Wonderplay "The Outsider," the screen version of the novel, "Nobody," by the popular author Louis Joseph Vance.
The s.s. Wairua, which has for so long been tied up at the Helensville wharf, out of commission, is to be structurally altered, and will be made ready for the Wairoa service in about three months' time. The alterations provide for the steamer being lengthened 20 feet, the ladies' cabin extended, cargo hold to be installed, and a mast derrick and winch to be supplied, to make the bbat a dual capacity one, to carry both passengers and cargo.
L\' Dr. Avorill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, is visiting this district on Tuesday Tiext, April Btb. He will dedicate the j Ohurch just lately erected at Kaukapa- [ kapa at 11 a.m. All friends are cordially invited to attend. Visitors can catch express train leaving Helensville at 10.17 a.m., returning from Kaukapakapa at 3.40 p.m. Luncheon will be provided ,for visitors in the Hall after the dedication service. In the evening at 7.30 p.m. the Bishop will conduct a Confirmation Service in St. Matthew's Church, Helensville, and will also preach.
The question of the high charge for cattle trucks made by the Public Works Department upon sections of line not handed over the Railway Department was discussed at the Farmers' Union Conference at Auckland, upon complaint from the Paparoa Branch. It was explained that the railway charge from Maungaturoto to Auckland was 13/-, but the Public Works Department cparged 30/- to run the trucks over the extra eight or nine miles under its control. It was decided to protest.
