RED GROSS EFFORT.
QUEEN CARNIVAL.
LAST week Helensville, usually so indifferent to the doings of this A world, was en f§te. The prelim*™ mary effort in the interests of our boys culminated on Saturday evening with the announcement of who had been elected Queen of the Carnival. This well deserved honour fell to Miss Jean Stewart, and the congratulations of the public were well expressed in the rounds of applause which followed the announcement in the Lyric Theatre. The , names of the other candidates' were received with cheers. Mrs Jas. Stewart feelingly thanked the people for the honour given to her daughter. All the committees worked hard, and stalls and guessing competitions were well patronisied Favours were freely worn, the maroon and gold of Miss Stewart (her brother's college colours) being predominent. Everyone worked with a good will, having the one object in view, assistance for Red Cross. \ The simmer of excitement is still wittTus, and there will be no rest until the objective, £2000, as Helensville's share, is reached or exceeded. During the next seven weeks entertainments of various kinds will be put on. A monster Art Union is on the go, a Ladies' Billiard Tournament has commenced, and side shows innumerable will be in evidence in a day or two. The Entertainment Committee have arranged a concert and dance for to-morrow night. Mr H. White is organising a Minstrel entertainment. Mr W. F, F. Raisher has a Breach of Promise case in hand, the fair plaintiff having already been found. The following votes were recorded, each vote represented 1/-: Miss Jean Stewart ... ... 9595 Mrs J. A. Wilson 7589 Miss Maud Rimmer ... 1578 Mrs W. J. Ellett ... ... 1069 Miss Chrissie Becroft ... 905 Miss Laura Farrell 159 Extra] . helensville queen carnival. [contributed by our sporting^ correspondent]. Results—Miss Stewart 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Miss Rimmer 3. Also started : Mrs Ellett, Miss Becroft, and Miss Farrell. A most interesting race, won by six lengths. The favourite won. —Notes —• j The. winner, Miss Stewart, was j always a firm favourite, and | justified public confidence by I winning in a canter, amidst much cheering. Mrs Wilson, who finished second, ran a real good race, being very prominent until six furlongs from home ; she is sure to improve with the race, and "will probably catch the Judge's eye during the season, Miss Rimmer finished third, after greatly pleasing the lads by her early morning track gallops ; she has proved herself a live stayer, with plenty of grit; the distance appeared rather short. Mrs Ellett, who finished fourth, ran her best race to date, and was only beaten by Miss Riramer in the last stride. Miss Becroft, who fiinished fifth, ran in the interests of the well-known sportsman, Miss Loudon, was evidently short of .*. work, and may perhaps do better in future events. Miss Farrell practically with- *. drew in the early stages of the journey. •
