GOOD WORK BY BRIGADE
THE Fire Brigade was called out at 1 o'clock this morning to attend art outbreak of fire at Diraka's fish shop, in the ECHO buildings, owned by Mr Jas. Hand. The alarm was given by Oapt. Sellars and Wr J. Bell, and the Fire Brigade were soon on the scene, assisted by a number residents. The shop was totally destroyed, and the fire spread to the Ideal Drapery store, damaging part of the stock. Within half-an-hour the Brigade had the fire under hand, and the adjoining buildings saved. A strong southerly wind was blowing at the time which materially checked the spread of the flames.
Mr Hand has an insure of £900 in the United on the whole block. Messrs Spitz and Phillips (Ideal Drapery) have their stock in sured in the Standard for £200. Dirakas are covered by £15 on their stock, £75 on furniture, and £10 on sewing machine, in the Norwich Union.
The remaining portion of the block was occupied, viz., Screaton, Mrs Easton, Farmers' Union, Jorgenson, ECHO Office, and d! Wylie.
