On Wednesday evening, April 24th, a splendid concert will be given b> a band of Maori entertainers in the Lyric Theatre, the proceeds to be divided between the patriotic and school swimming bath funds.

The 25 whales stranded at Bayley's Reserve,near Dargaville which were being cut up and boiled down for oil, were swept out to sea by the very high tide on Monday evening. With the whales went the oil-boiling apparatus. One whale was washed back and deposited a-quarter of a mile away.

On Easter Monday in the Domain grounds the luncheon and afternoon tea, promoted by Mrs Jas. McLeod and friends, realised £17 10s, which sum was added to by Messrs Mitchell and Allsop (£2), and Roynane and Dwerryhouse (10s), making a total of £20. This sum was handed over to the V.M.C.A. by the Parakai branch of the Women's Patriotic League.

A smoke concert was given by the residents of Makarau ana Tahekeroa at Mr Smith's house on Saturday evening, April 6th, as a send-off to Private Percy H. Marks, who leaves shortly for camp. Quite a number were present^ including some from a long distance. During the evening Mr Geraghty, on behalf of all present, presented Private Marks with a handsome case of pipes, as a token of the esteem in which he is held. Private Marks briefly replied, thanking them for the very pleasant evening, also for the handsome gift which he very much appreciated.

Quite a jovial evening was spent in the Lyric Theatre on Thursday last, 4th insfc., the occasion being a welcome home to some of our returned soldier boys, and a send-off to others who are going to the front. Of the returned boys only Private S. Scott put in an appearance, while the departing boys were LanceCorpl. Stewart and Private R. Bennett. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with a good programme of vocal items, the following kindly contributing —Miss Brady, Mrs T. Scctt, and Messrs P, McLeod, J. Paul, and M. McGarvey. The usual shaving outfit and pair of socks were presented to the boys who are leaving to do their bit for King and Empire. Miss M. Cullens pJayed the dance music, while Messrs G. and J. Constable officiated as Ms.C. Light refreshments, supplied by the ladies were partaken of, and greatly appreciated. With the approach of early morning the-party broke up, after having spent a most enjoyable time. '
