THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR
RESOLUTION PASSED AT
HELEN SVILLE
Occasion was taken on Saturday evening last, during the interval at the Lyric Picture Theatre by the Chairman of the Helensville Town Board (Mr J. F. Lambert) to refer to the anniversary of the war and to ask those present to pass the following Empire resolution forwarded by the Right Hon. W. F. Massey for the purpose : — " That on this the Third Anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war, this meeting of the Citizens of Helensville records its inflexible determination to continue to a victorious end the struggle in mainteance of those ideals of Liberty and Justice which are the common and sacred cause of the Allies." In speaking to the resolution Mr Lambert drew attention to many incidents of the war and its progress. He said New Zealanders had and were still doing their share of duty towards assisting the Allies to victory. Only recently they had received great praise for their action in the Battle of Messines, and as late as that day (Saturday) news had come to hand of their successes at La Basse Ville. Here they were reported to have consolidated their gains after successfully routing the Germans from strong positions, and were still holding the country. This was, he said, only an instance of how our brave boys had excelled themselves, and it was the duty of the meeting to pass the resolution out of respect to the soldiers who were fighting and giving up their valuable lives for our freedom and liberty. Mr Jas, Stewart seconded the resolution and impressed on the audience the necessity of investing their available money in War Bonds in order to assist in carrying on the war to a victorious end. It was no use leaving their money idle when there was a duty to perform. If the Germans got possession of the country money and everything else would be lost.
The motion was then put and carried unanimously.
