THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, Aug 9, 1917 FLASHES.
The Helensville Town Board hold their usual monthly meeting this evening. A second-hand bicycle in good order is advertised for sale. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court will be held in Helensville to-morrow | (Friday). j A euchre and dance will be held in the Star Theatre on Monday evening next, the proceeds going towards the Catholic Church Fund. The fiaxmill at Eeweiti is in full swing, notwithstanding the congestion of fibre on the market at the present time. We are assured by the Premier that ample accommodation for the next season's butter supply will be provided, and that there will be sufficient shipping to release the congested local market. Miss Loudon (late Megson's) is daily receiving new season's goods, suitable for the requirements of her lady and gentlemen patrons. A large stock of drapery, boots and shoes has been opened np, and are worthy of inspection. Bitterly cold weather has been experienced in Helensville during the week. The most remarkable thing about it is that during the early part of the week the wind has been blowing from a northerly direction, which is usually far from being cold. Last week Mr H. Graham, storekeeper Helensville, landed about 280 bags of chaff (part of a large consignment) from Messrs Buckland and Sons' Southhead Estate. The chaff is of excellent quality and is said to be quite up to the Southern chaff recently landed in these parts. It is with regret that we have to chronicle the death of the infant daughter (Louvain Eose) of Sergt.-Major and Mrs Stokes,. who died at Helensville on Saturday last after a short illness. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the Helensville cemetery, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. A. V, Venables.
In 1916 the area I under wheat in the United Kingdom was 2,053,568 acres, the estimated production 7,471,884 quarters (nearly 30 bushels per acre), and the average price per quarter, 58s sd. For barley the corresponding figures were 1,653,376 acres, 6,612,550 quarters, and 53a 6d; and for oats, 4,171,353 acres, 21,333,782 quarters, and 33s sd.
At the memorial service last Sunday afternoon at the Lyric Theatre, the Rev. F. R. Jeffries delivered a most vigorous and plain-spoken address. The military were represented by Staff Officers, members of the Kaipara Defence Rifle Club, Senior Cadets and Boy Scouts. The preacher based his subject on the text— " The wages of sin is death. The gift of God is eternal life." The collection amounting to £3 2s Id, was devoted to the Helensville and Parakai Patriotic Leagues.
A grand picture matinee, organised by the Helensville and Parakai Women's Patriotic League, was held in the Lyric Theatre, on Saturday afternoon last. There was a good attendance of adults and children, who thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The ladies of both Leagues provided afternoon tea; also the supper at the evening's picture entertainment. Mr Jas. Stewart kindly let the hall and supper-room free, also the use of the films, and lent a helping hand, for which the League are very gratelful. The proceeds amounted to £17, and the expenses were very light. The buttonholes sold by the children realised 355, which greatly helped to swell the funds.
The Wairoa " Bell" writes with wrath on the negleted state of the roads in the Borough of Dargaville as follows:— " There is mud everywhere in the district Those responsible for taking over unmetalled roads in the Borough of Dargaville deserve to be sent down Logan Street in motor cars. How much more sensible and comfortable it would have been to have had a metalled road instead of the feet of slush and mud, and the formation all trodden out of existence both on roads and footpaths. The names of the councillors responsible for this madness should be put on a roll of " honour," and hung up in or outside the Council Chambers for public applause."
