Mr A. Walker has been recently appointed representate for Messrs A. Buckland and Sons in the Helensville district.
Parliament opens to-day, and it is predicted that it will be a strenuous one ; but of short duration. Matters arising out of the war will be the chief bone of contention and arranging the taxation for the coming twelve months.
On Monday evening next, 2nd Jtlly the usual monthy euchre party and dance will be held in the Star Theatre. < These social evenings, promoted by the Church of , England Ladies' Guild, have been most successful, and this one should prove no exception. Special attention is drawn to the great sacrifice sale of an up-to-date stock of drapery and clothing by the Ideal Drapery Co. (for ten days only), in premises a few doors from, the ECHO Office. ' Next Sunday evening a special service will be held at the Methodist Church, Helensville, commencing at 7 p.m. Mr J. Laking, J.P., of Onehunga, is appointed to preach, and his subject will be " Personal experience of God and personal influence with men." To-night, in the Star Theatre, the Helensville Women's Patriotic League will hold a social evening, at which there will be plenty of amusements for all. Readers should remember the cause, and assist in providing comforts for " our soldier boys" now fighting for our liberty. A public meeting will be held in the , Star Theatre on Monday, July 2, at 8 p.m., when Mr F. Norris, the Hon. Organiser of the New Zealand National Service League, will give an address urging the necessity' of the Government taking immediate-steps to build a training college where returned wounded soldiers may be taught suitable trades.
Mr S. F. Scott, of Helensville, received a cable last Friday informing him that his son, Sergt. C. F. Scott, was wounded on the 7th inst., the same day that his cousin, Lieut. W. R. McGormick (of Te Aroha) was killed. Both young soldiers are grandsons of Mr F. Strange of Kaipara Flats
The usual monthly military memorial Service=svill be held on Sunday next, Ist July, atji.3o p.m.. in the Star Theatre. Military and local bodies are requested to attend in uniform or regalia, and to fall in at 2 p.m sharp at the Agricultural Hall. The Rev. A. V. Venables will deliver,an address
We have heard of our old friend, Mr J. Rimmer, who is well, and making aeroplane" engines in Bedford. He spent a day lately with Ernest Mascall (late of Helensville), who is an instructor of Motor-boat chasers engines and gunnery. Mr Rimmer states that he is very glad to receive the Echo as it keeps him well in touch with what- is going on in Helensville.
Mr F. Norris, Hon. Organiser National Service League, and Hon. Visiting •fficer Dominion Boy Scouts, will be the preacher at the Helensville Presb^erian Church on Sunday next, July l, at 7 p.m. Mr Norris, who is commended by the leaders of the different churches, will take for his subject: " The bright side of the war; will you help,to make it brighter ?"
On Thursday evening last at the Star Theatro a pleasant evening was spent in the form of a " Hard-up " social, in aid of the soldiers 1 send-off fund. Very few availed themselves of the opportunity to don " rags all tattered fend torn," but those who did were original and amusing. The bun-eating competition was decidedly funny, Mr .ttoy Spinley proving the champion. The dance music was supplied by Miss M. Cullen, while the duties of'M's.C. were carried out by Messrs J. and R. Constable.
