SUCCESSFUL CONCERT.

HELENSVILLE BRASS BAND,

The Helensville Brass Band gave their second concert in the Star Theatre on Thursday evening, October 12th. From a musical point of view it was a decided success. The hall was well filled in spite of an unavoidable counter attraction and the inclemency of the weather. The Band has decidedly improved under the baton of Mr Berryman, purer tone especially being noticeable. In the various marches time was precise, and there was the necessary rhythm. The brass quartette was again given in good style. In all the Band are to be congratulated on the performance, the only deficiency being the absence of the drums, which cr '■-,', , , , ~, . . . . . .Jiild not be brought in owing t^ .. provision should be t- . .-• -1 c *am • f , - -aade for this in future. The audier'-, „ , , . . , ' . ~ . -oe were fortunate in having 1 j p oPP^rtunity of hearing Miss Muriel . a young lady of great promise, who is a pupil of Mr Barry Coney. Besides possessing a deep contralto voice of fine warm quality and very great power which is produced with such ease as can only result from correct teaching, her charming and striking stage presence adds to the entrancement-of her listeners. Her songs were admirably chosen, and sung with such temperament and nerve that treble encores were demanded of her. Mrs Carter, as accompanist, had no easy task in assisting Miss Allen's admirable performance, and gave the necessary support both in tone and interpretation, Mr Carter also rendered a couple of songs with success.

During the evening Captain Coates, who was on his final leave, was presented to the audience by the president of the Band, Mr T. Elliott, and bade farewell, prior to going to the front. The usual dance followed.
