RED GROSS LEAGUE.
MORE MONEY WANTED MONTHLY.
EQUIPPING HOSPITAL SHIPS.
Notwithstanding the fact that the Women's Patriotic League of Helensville is doing its utmost in raising funds and work on behalf of the Red Cross Society, another and greater effort is being made by the Auckland Division of the N. 2. Branch of the British Red Cross Society to increase the support, as the following letter from the Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. H. Grunson) will show: —
To the Editor of Echo, Helensville
The Direct Appeal—Herewith we enclose one Subscription List for funds for Red Cross work. Will you kindly do your best to collect subscriptions for this very worthy object ? The need is great and growing. The Committee is anxious to avoid the necessity of taking up street collections ; also resorting to undesirable methods of raising money.
Joint Workers —The Joint Committee, which was formed for the purpose of coordinating all branches of Red Cross work in the Auckland Military area, has now opened a Central Depot in the Model House, Queen Street, Auckland, kindly lent for the purpose by Messrs John Court, Ltd. The Depot is open every day for the reception of donations of money or saleable goods.- . ,
Our Aim —The Committee's immediate object is to respond to the fund of "Our Day" in accordance with the appeal issued throughout the Empire by Lords Landsdpwne and Plymouth, acd in addition, the Committee wishes to establish and maintain a local fund of £1000, to be available for the purchase of material and providing for any urgent calls for equipping Hospital Ships or other needs, and afterwards to'send forward regular contributions to Great Britain.
Agents—The Women's Patriotic League, the Victoria League, and St. John Ambulance Association, with their various branches throughout the province, will be the recognised agents of the Joint Committee, and will be glad to receive and forward to headquarters gifts in money or kind.
Treasurer's Instructions — Will you kindly forward on the 19th of each month to the Treasurer, a duplicate list of subscriptions received, starting with the amount collected up to 7 p.m. on 19th October. This does not infer the closing of the list; the effort must be continued as long as the war lasts. Your early, energetic and continuous service in this cause is earnestly solicited.
[As the Editor cannot go round personally with the Subscription List in question, we will be pleased to receive subscriptions at the ECHO office. The need is so imperative, and the opportunities for rendering aid are so manifold that it is needless to dwell further upon the urgency of the matter].
