MILITARY SERVICE ACT, 1916
ENROLMENT OF EXPEDITIONERY FORCE RESERVE.
ROLL UP! OCTORER 16TH, THE LAST DAY.
Procrastination may give a careless or negligent man some time in prison. Under the Military Service Act a Reservist who does not send by registered letter to the Government Statistician a timely notice of change of address may make himself liable to a charge of desertion. Any post-office will supply tho necessary forms, cards, information, and help. Enrolling the fighting man power of Netv Zealand is practically the task of the Government Statistician. His work is twofold. He has to obtain the names and addresses of men ~of military age; h6 has to ascertain what the man-power is and where it is. Eveiy Reservist is under statutory obligations to report any change of abode. A heavy penalty may be suffered by a Reservist who fails to give iuformation as to his new place of residence. It should be noted that a post-office address is not sufficient—place of abode must be furnished.
What is to be the function of the police in respect to the Military Service Act ? How far the police are to come into the case of any Reservist depends od the man himself. If he taices the trouble to read the advertisement in this issue or a poster, or if he calls at a post-office, he will learn how to avoid any embarassing or worrying attentions from the police. Constables are authorised to question a Eeservist en the subject of enrolmont, and they have power t'» detain a man if they are not satisfied with his replies. , Ever? .Reservist should irake prompt application for a certificate of enrolment which satisfi^ the police, This document also acts as a passport to employmeut.
