THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, Sept. 14, 1916 THE TOWN BOARD ELECTION.

NEXT WEDNESDAY,

The biennial election of the Helensville Town Board takes place next Wednesday, 20th inst., the polling • place being the Town Board Office. Votes can be recorded between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The new electoral roll, containing 458 names, has been printed, and can be procured from the Town Clerk. That there is considerable interest evinced in the election is manifest by the number of nominations received up to closing time at noon yesterday, there being 11 candidates in the field for the seven seats, viz., Messrs Aitkenhead, Becroft, Bradly, Elliott, Field, graham, Hand, Lambert, Spinley, Stewart, and Thompson. Now it appears to our unsophisticated mind that inelecting the required members, who will also combine the Helensville Domain Board with their office, that it is a clear case of six-of-one and half-a-dozen-of-the-other. Certainly there has been "some talk" occasionally of what the old Board has done, and what it has not done, but that is the case with every local body. But it is certainly unfortunate that the candidates have not announced their platform, either from the hustings or through the Press. In this respect, therefore, "they have not much go in them." The electors are supposed to know each candidate personally, his character, and his ability to administer the affairs of the ratepayers to the best advantage. It is somewhat encouraging to one and all to see such a large number of candidates come forward to fill the seven vacancies for the honour and glory of ideal self-government, and it is hard to pick the best men to please everybody, but whatever happens, we hope to be able to record a heavy poll in our next issue, and to congratulate the new Board as a whole.

[Since the above was in type, a movement has been made towards holding a

public meeting, when the various candidates will address the electors on Town Board matters. This is a step in the right direction, and we hope there will be a monster gathering in the Star Theatre on Monday next at 8 p.m. Ladies are invited to attend.]
