Lord Kitchener is, dead. The Great Field-Marshal'was on his way to Russia in H.M.S. Hampshire, when the vessel struck a mine, or was hit by a torpedo west of the Orkneys, with the result Hhat she sank in a few moments. •
Four boats were seen to leave the ship, but befora.: aid could come to them they were capsized in the heavy sea and their crews were drowned, not a soul of those aboard the cruiser being saved.
He was proceeding to Russia to consult with the Czar on important financial and military questions. It is estimated that 650 officers and men were drowned. -:'■•
