RED CROSS TEA AND DANCE

The Red Cross Tea and Dance, held in the Star Theatre on Thursday last (11th inst.), proved one of the most j successful and enjoyable functions held lin Helensville in connection with the I Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Great credit is due to the committee of ladies, who worked so enthusiastically and spared neither time nor labour. The stage and supper room of the Star Theatre were tasefully decorated, and daintily arranged tables laden with delicious edibles looked very tempting, and drew the patronage of a large number of people. In the evening the Hall was crowded, and a brisk business was done. Miss Channon supplied the dance music in her usual capable style, while Messrs Lambert and Sandin were untiring in their duties as Ms.C. Songs were rendered by Messrs Carter, Screaton, Mascall, McGarvey, and Hammond, the latter reciving quite an ovation and hearty assistance in his rendering of " Tipperary " and " A Wee Deoch and Doris." A violin solo by Mr Carter and a pianoforte solo by Master Ivan Lambert were also greaty appreciated. The Guessing competitions resulted as follows: Iced cake, presented by Mr Ramsay, won by Mrs Wilson ; iced cake, presented by Mr Becroft, .won by Mr J. A. Wilson ; number of beans in bottle, won by Mr Garry. Before the gathering broke up, Mr Field, assisted by Messrs Stringer and C. Sandin, conducted an auction sale of cakes, fruit, flowers, tea, sugar, etc. Mr J. A Wilson handed in the cake won by him, and after heated bidding, he again became the possessor oi it for the sum of £2. The Fund will benefit to tbe extent of over £20. "
