Submarines in Baltic —Six German Transports ■ Sunk — Enemy Lose Two Destroyers — Stubborn Servian Defence—lnvaders' Heavy Losses—Fighting in East Africa
Six German transports in the Baltic have been sunk by a British submarine, and one transport was compelled to go ashore.
Copenhagen reports state that British submarines have sunk two German destroyers in the Baltic. In one contest a British submarine was opposed to, a crviser and three destroyers. After one destroyer had been sunk*the others fled.
The Austro-German force attacking Servia has sustained heavy casualties, estimated at over 20.000 killed and 50,000 •wounded.
A flank attack by the Russians west of Tarnopol, in Galicia, threw the Germans back with heavy losses. Persistent enemy counter-attacks in the sama region were repulsed.
The British have improved their position in the Hohenzollern Redoubt—a strong fort near the extreme north of the line along which the recent advance was made—-and hold all the ground won on the 13th inst. There has been violent artillery action alongthe whole front, and fierce German attacks in Champagne and Vosges, which achieved only slight results, altogether disproportionate to the effort. A British force has defeated 2000 Germans in German East Africa.
The total British casualties at the Dardanelles number 96 899 This figure includes 29,1^1 Australian and New Zealand casualties.
