Terrific Bombardment—Shower of Shell £in West — Allies Still Winning Ground — Severe Fighting in East — Heavy German Losses

The allies are still wresting ground from the enemy in France Severe fighting continues round Lens, ten miles north of Arras, and the British have made further progress south of Loos. Part of Kitchener's army has been engaged. The British have now captured over 3000 prisoners and 21 guns.

The French, having captured Souchez, are winning: their way foot by foot towards the heights near the town. In Champagne district they have made fresh progress, and "have captured an additional 800 prisoners.

The bombardment to which the whole German line was subjected prior to the infantry attacks was of unprecedented intensity.

The German defeat in the Argonne, mentioned in cables yesterday, proves to have been serious. Seven battalions were repulsed with heavy losses.

In a speech in the House of Commons, Sir E. Grey warned Bulgaria that if she allowed herself to be used by Germany Britain would support her friends in the Balkans without reserve or qualificrtion, and her allies would do the same.
