More Progress in West — Allied Attack Sustained —Russia's Fight in the East—Advance in Volhynia

The allies are still attacking the German positions near the French and Belgian border and in the Champagne district. The British have maintained the gains made in their attacks north-west and south-west of Lille. North-west of Hullich thsy repulsed a number of counter-attacks, and east of Loos they continued their offensive. The British captured 2800 Germans, 18 guns, and 32 machineguns.

The attacks in the west have so far yielded 23,000 prisoners. A feature of the allied offensive is aeroplane raids 40 miles, behind the German lines on railway junctions, which seriously interfered with the movements of reseive troops.

Important Russian successes are reported from both ends of the line. A strong German column near Dvinsk was lured into marshy ground, surrounded, and annihilated. The Austrians have evacuated Brody, one of the Volhynian triangle of fortresses.

The Russians are- advancing along the Roumanian frontier, and since early in September have retaken seventy miles in the Kovel region.

It is stated that the allies have informed Greece that in the event of an attack on Servia or Greece the allies will come to the rescue with men and money.

The Dardanelles operations have recently been confined to bombardments and mining.
