Gap in German Lines — Russian Success in Baltic—Bombardment on Gallipoli — Allied Air Raid in Belgium — Bombs on German Submarines
The Russians have assumed the offensive in the Friedrichstadt district, between Riga and Dvinsk, and made a great gap in the German lines, compelling yon Buelow to retreat. They captured 1500 prisoners, and many machine-guns. In the south the Russians continue successful in Volhynia and Galicia. The Russian army which was in the Vilna region has completed its withdrawal to a new position. It inflicted 250,000 casualties on the enemy.
Bulgaria is mobilising 27 classes of the reserves. This has caused considerable excitement in Greece, but an Athens report suggests that the real reason for the mobilisation is fear of Germany attempting to violate Bulgarian territory in order to send assistance to Turkey.
Allied airmen have dropped bombs on submarines at Bruges, and inland town east of Ostend, which is connected by a canal with Zeebrugge, where the Germans have been building submarines. The harbour and factory at Bruges were destroyed.
