Army Avoids Capture — Fighting Retreat from Vilna — Raid by Allied Airmen—Turkish Transport Sunk
The Russian retreat from Vilna is describes as one of the most brilliant exploits of the war. The Russians fought on two fronts, and won a way through the enveloping columns. Correspondents are now speculating as
to the next German move. There
has been desperate fighting west Satof Dvinsk, the Russians driving Germans back. In the south "near the Galician border, the Russians continue successful, having captured, villag.es and numerous prisoners. The first detailed account of capture of Novo Georgievsh, the fortress 19 miles north-west of Warsaw, by the Germans, shows that the Russian garrison of 1000 fought to the last, and inflicted enormous losses.
As a measure of punishment for the bombardment of open towns in France and England, allied airmen dropped 30 shells on the Royal Palace and railway station at Stuttgart, the capital of the kingdom of Wurtemberg, which is the centre of a network of railways. Both the station and the palace ' were famous buildings.
