We beg to acknowledge receipt of a quantity of scallops from Mr Percy Megson, purser of s.s Tuirangi. They are a delicious sweet shell-fish, and when properly cooked, quite equal any other fish in the sea.
We (Hastings Bulletin) did not notice J. D. Ormond's name amongst the delinquents haled before the Mock Court, but rumour has it that this great man, whose millions our boys are dying to save, has got a point on to the local squatters by giving £10,000. Well, now, if they all did that a war tax would hardly be necessary.
A correspondent writes to say—" If the war has anything to do with the poor man's butter, why is that' commodity two-pence per lb dearer in Helensville (where it is produced) than in Auckland ? It is atrocious! Then there are other peculiarities in our every-day requirements, twp-pence here and three-pence there being stuck on and above Auckland prices, when they should be the same."
Owing to the rapid increase of business the Kaipara Co-operative Dairy Factory Company has found it necessary to increase the plant. In preparation for the coming season they are installing a new lot of machinery, comprising a six ton freezer, a 600 gallon vat, a 1000 gallon pasteuriser, and 14001b churn. In their first season, four years ago, the Company manufactured 130 tons of butter. Last season the output had increased to 334 tons, and this coming season it is anticipated they will manufacture over 400 ;tons, which goes to show the satisfaction given, and the confidence the suppliers have in the Kaipara Dairy Factory Company.
