The Germans have been dislodged from the region between the Dvina and the Eckau, south of Riga. From Narew the enemy is still attacking vigorously, great forces being directed against the Lomza-Ostrow sector, which lies east of the upper Narew. It is reported through press channels in Petrograd that Russia emphatically rejected an offer of peace by the Kaiser.
The Turks in their trenches on the Gallipoli Peninsula have listened to their first haka. A New Zealand officer describes how a war dance given by the Maori contingent in honour of a pakeha general perplexed the enemy. The Turkish newspaper subsequently commented that for the first time in history the Dardanelles had had to endure an attack by cannibals.
The Italians are bombarding the railway station of Rovereto, in the south of Trentino. Their guns have inflicted severe damage. The inhabitants of Gorz, on the Isonzo, which is invested by the Italians, are reported to '* be suffering from famine. >
