German Naval Reverse — Three

Warships Damaged — Russians Holding Their Ground—Turkish Battleship Sunk — Successful French Air Raid

A German fleet, comprising nine battleships and a number of cruisers and destroyers, was repulsed by the Russians from the entrance to the Gulf of Riga. An enemy cruiser and two destroyers were damaged by mines.

The Germans are directing a formidable attack against the Russian fortress of Kovno, on the Niemen. The assault against the western front of the fortress was everywhere repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy.

A large force of French aeroplanes attacked the railway station and munitions factory at Saarbrucken, in the Rhine Province, 33 miles east of Metz. The raiders dropped 164 bombs on the town, and numerous columns of smoke were observed.

The Turkish battleship Hairredin Barbarosse, is officially reported from Constantinople to have been sunk by an allied submarine.

Messages from Laibach, in Austria, received in Switzerland, state that 30,000 Italians, with powerful artillery, made a five hours' attack on Gorz on Monday. The Austrians fell back towards the town, leaving 2000 dead and 800 prisoners.
