Italian Advance — Austrian Line Threatened — Russia's Stubborn Fight—British Submarine Activity Transport and Destroyer Sunk

The Italians are driving a wedge between the Austrian positions at Gorz and Tolmein, and threaten the whole defensive line from the Carnic Alps to the Adriatic. The fall of either Tarvis Tolmein or Gorz, on the Isonzo line, is expected to have important strategic results. The Italians have made progress there and also in the Tyrol. The Italian successes have alarmed the Austrians, who are renewing work on the fortifications of Vienna.

The Russians are still fighting stubbornly along the approaches to Warsaw. A sanguinary battle is in progress along the Narew front, where the' Germans have conceutrated very large forces.

Reports from Amsterdam state that 140,000 Germans, chiefly new troops, have passed through Luxemburg, westward, during the past ten days.

British submarines are active in the North Sea and the Sea of Marmora. A German destroyer of 640 tons has been sunk off the German coast. The submarines which entered the Sea of Marmora skirted the Asiatic shore to Constantinople.

The Russian fleet has sunk ten colliers in the Black Sea and 200 coal sailing boats, besides raiding depots and ship-yards.

A Salonica report says that a grave difference of opinion has arisen between Enver Pasha and other Turkish Ministers over the treatment of Bulgaria. Enver Pasha threatens to throw the country into civil war.
