ARE THE ALLIES REALLY WINNING ?

ONCE more, in " Life" for August, Dr Fitchett gives us a wonderful review of the fighting of the month in Europe and on the Sea. In the course of one section of this review Dr. Fitchett frankly admits that the month has been «one of disappointments. In his usual vigorous and picturesque style Dr Fitchett then outlines the fighting of the month on both fronts and in Gallipoli. Having done so, he proceeds to point out the bright spots in the landscase and to analyse the disappointments. The result is he shows clearly that in reality the balance during the month has tipped in the Allies' favour. It is a practical and heartening pronouncement that gives the reader a wonderfully clear-eyed view of the war.

Readers of this August issue-of " Life " will notice that the Editor is by no means devoting his entire space to the war; on the contrary, we find such illustrated articles as " Morrissy of the Snakes," with some remarkable photographs, and telling some of the adventures of that widely-know character, who says of himself : " I reckon I'm the chap they wrote the proverb about that ' a rollin1 stone gathers no moss.' "

The departments in " Life" are, as usual.filled with good things for busy man. It sells locally for sixpence; but if unobtainable, a 3s postal note sent to T. Shaw Fitchett, 376 Swanston Street' Melbourne, will bring it by post each month for six months.
