Russians Retiring—Army Short of Munitions — Bomb Warfare on Gallipoli — Success of Colonial Sappers
According to a message from Petrograd, the Russians are preparing the public for a new withdrawal of the Russian.troops on account of the enemy's overwhelming superiority in guns and munitions. It is stated that the resumption of the Russian offensive will be impossible until the mobilisation of industry supplies the army with munitions.
In his latest despatch from Gaba Tepe, Mr C. E. W. Bean, the Australial official correspondent, mentions that the New Zealanders are becoming adept in the use of bombs. In one day they threw nearly 600 bombs from Quina's Post. Beth Australians and New Zealanders are actively engaged in-mining warfare and have achieved several successes against the enemy's sappers.
Allied airmen raided Smyrna and destroyed the gasworks and a petrol depot.
A " fairly calm" day is reported along the western front. The French maintained their gains in the Vosges against a violent attack. Sir John French reports active mining operations on the British front.
