FRIDAY

Guns Heard in Warsaw — German Submarines Damaged — Base at Zeebrugge Attacked—Bombarded from Sea and Air.

The sound of guns has reached Warsaw from Piaseczno, 10 miles to the south of the city, where heavy artillery is engaged. Though the Russians hold strong lines, the population realises that the situation is critical. To the north the Russians are holding the enemy, while to the south, in the region of Chelm, they are described as fighting the fight of their lives.

Reports from Belgium received at Amsterdam state that the French warships on Friday bombarded where the Germans 'had been concentrating submarines. A German torpedo boat 'was damaged. Allied airmen have also bombarded Zeebrugge, and it is believed that two German submarines have been damaged.

The Italians report the capture of Austrian trenches in the Carnic Alps, and further progress on the Carso Plateau.
