HOSPITAL SHIP FUND CONCERT

THE public of Helensville and surrounding districts turned up in good numbers to patronise the above concert, which was held in the Helensville Theatre on Wednesday evening, June 9th. The attraction of the evening was Mr Barry Coney, whose musical items were repeatedly encored, especially in that catchy song which includes in the chorus " A.'pain where the waistcoat begins." The accompaniments were played by Mrs J. Carter and Miss M. Rimmer. The price for admission for a "benefit night" for our brave sick and wounded boys, was far too cheap, especially as the admission tickets included programmes (printed by the ECHO free gratis for nothing.) The following was the programme for the evening, which was greatly appreciated by the audience, every item rendered being vociferously encored :— Song, 'My Old ' Shako,' Mr E Cucksey; song, 'Waiting,' Mrs James ; violin solo, Mazurka, Mr J. Carter; song, ' The Floral Dance,' Mr Barry Coney ; pianoforte solo, ' 0 Lieb,' Mrs J. Cartersong, ' In God's Good Time,' Miss Rimmer ; song, ' The Trumpeter,' Mr C. White; Hornpipe dance, Helensville school children, under the conductorship of Miss Ganley. This item was .especially appreciated. In the second part the vocal duo, 'Break Diviner Light,' was rendered by Miss M Rimmer and Mr J. Carter ; song,' The Wind in the Corn,' Miss Fletcher ; song, ' Sing—Break into Song,' Mr J. Carter , piano solo, 'Jai elske die,' Mrs J Carter ; song, ' A Garden Full of Roses.' Miss Stevenson; song, Brian of Glenaar,' Mr Barry Coney ; and a trio, ' Memory,' by Miss M. Rimmer, Mr C. White and Mr J. Carter, terminating a very enjoyable programme. The jumble auction, held afterwards caused a great deal of amusement, and the first article put up for sale, a cruet, was sold four times, at £1 each bid. Perhaps the auction would have been success had it taken place in the middle of the programme, instead of at the end when a number of the people made their exit.

The following has been handed in by Mr J. Carter, for publication : —

Proceeds of Dance, arranged by Messrs J. F. Lambert and G Murphy, £6 2s 9d. Mr A. Becroft gave the Star Theatre free of charge.
