Allies Press Forward—An Offensive in France—Progress on GaUipoli—Encircling the Turks
An offensive movement by the allies in North-east France is reported in to-day's cables. At several points between Armentieries and Arras the allies have attacked and gained ground. Sir John French reports that the British First Army attacked the German lines between Festabert and Bois Grenier, and advanced towards Fromelles, west of Lille. British airmen dropped bombs on German positions north and south-west of Lille. Further south the allies have made marked progress in the direction of Loos and Carency, north of Lens, capturing German trenches along a front of four miles. One village and part of another village north of Arras, have been captured, and 2000 prisoners and six guns taken.
In Flanders, Sir John French reports that the British line is perfectly established. German attacks east of Ypres during the week-end have been repulsed with heavy losses.
Reports from Athens state that the allied forces operating on the Gallipoli Peninsula have captured important heights commanding Kilid Bahr, the main Turkish fort on the European side of the Narrows. The Turkish defence is weakening under the fire of warships and artillery.
