FLASHES

Jas. Hand is ofiering £1 reward for lost steers. Railway excursions in connection with the Easter holidays are now announced, to commence on Thursday, April Ist next. Ten pounds reward offered for information as to who threw that half-brick at lady's window, out Parakai. way. Dr. Harry G. Phippen may now be consulted at First Avenue, Helensville South. Tenders are required for grubbing, ploughing, etc., at Bickerstaff settlement. Two big jobs for willing hands. Easter Monday's Sports promise to be a great success this year, and the entries are coming in freely. The skating season will commence at the Helensville Theatre on Friday. All skaters are invited to attend a complimentary evening.—[Ad] If State bakeries were started in New South Wales, says the Attorney-General, a penny a loaf would be saved to the public. Tenders are called for stumping school ground at Parkhurst. Also for discing, sowing, etc., of 40 acres on farm lately occupied by Chas. Russell. Particular notice is drawn elsewhere to the Harvest Thanksgiving services to be held in the Methodist Churches on Sunday next. . The Ideal Drapery Supply Stores, of Auckland, are now holding a big sale of up-to-date autumn and winter goods, near ECEO Office. " Honest John " Bollard, for so many years M.P. for Eden, died on Tuesday, at the age of 75, after undergoing a serious operation. Owing to circumstances over which the management had no control, it has been decided to cancel former arrangements made to hold a sale of "Harvest gifts " in connection with the Methodist Churches of the circuit this year. The picnic given by. Messrs Stewart Bros to their employees on Wednesday was an immense success. The good ship Tuhirangi (Capt. Ross), returning from Bucklands about 10.30 p.m., landed all safe and jolly. The " free list" was entirely suspended upon this occasion. The Otamatea County Council is going to provide its Engineer with a motor car to travel about in. Some ratepayers are of opinion that its cost, about £300, would be better expended upon the roads which are none too good. The opening ceremony in connection with the Dargaville Gum Cleaning Factory Company, took place on Friday last. It is expected that the new procees will revolutionise the gum industry and save it some £100,000 per annum. Let us hope so. It doesn't say much for the veracity of of the Auckland Star, when the Chairman of the Waitemata County Council (Mr F. Dye), has to flatly contradict a garbled report about that important body " kicking up a rumpus," etc. See letter elsewhere.

After a week's pleasant downpour, the weather took up splendidly on Wednesday, thus enabling the employees of Messrs Stewart Bros, (quite fifty), to thoroughly enjoy the firm's first annual pic-nic to the Heads.

Amongst the visitors to the Tennis Club's recent pic-nic recorded in last issue, Mr and Mrs H. W. Stringer's names should be included, in place of Mr and Mrs F. Strange.

Mr Stringer informs us that he has received a cheque for £1 Is from the Auckland Farmers' Union, being the proceeds of the sale of a dog, on behalf oj the Belgian Fund. The amount was was made up as follows :—J. Carran ss, A. Cameron ss, H. W. Mather ss, Cash ss, and G. Bradly Is. The cheque was duly forwarded to the acting-vice-Consul for Belgium. *
