MAUNGATUROTO SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL

(by our special)

FRIDAY, 19th prox., was fine and sunny, and all that could be desired from a Show point of view. The attendance was a good deal smaller than usual, about £5 less being taken at the gate. • Regarding the indoor show — The entries in the cookery and needlework sections were nearly double those of last year, and reflected great credit on the ladies. The fruit entries were not quite so numerous, but were all of good quality. In the vegetable and field produce sections, though the quantity was not quite up to the average, the quality was very good for the season. # No doubt a much larger display could have been shown if the public would only take the trouble to fetch along a little of their best. It all goes to advertise their district even though they may not get a prize, and certainly it gives visitors a better impression of the district. Now, as to the stock —The sheep entries were nearly double those of last year, and were all of a real good standard. The cattle were not quite up to their usual numbers, but all were of fair quality, As usual at this show, a feature was made of the Jersey class. Mr T. J. Stewart secured the prizes for champion Jersey bull and also for Jersey cow. The ring exhibits were about up to their usual quantity and quality. Mr J. Sloane secured the champion hack prize with a fine animal. A rather nasty accident occurred during the jumping classes. Mr R. Finlayson's horse struck a hurdle and fell -heavily with him. He struck the ground heavily, and received a slight concussion. Luckily no bones were broken, and he is now slowly recovering. In the evening an excellent concert was held in the Hall, the building being packed to the doors. After the concert the Hall was cleared and dancing indulged in until about 2 a.m. Mr Collins efficiently carried out the arduous duties of secretary to the Show, and a good Heal of the success is due to his , efforts.
