OBITUARY
AN old and highly - respected settler of some fifty years' standing, in the person of Mr John Masefield, of Batley, passed away to his long home at the age of 71 years, on Wednesday, 3rd inst., at the residence of his nephew, Mr Wm. Channon, Garfield Road Helensville. Deceased came to Helensville about a fortnight ago for medical treatment, but there was no hope of recovery. Mr A. Becroft is making a handsome coffin to-day, and the body will be conveyed to Pahi for interment alongside deceased's late' wife.
Private Vincent Becroft (aged 20), the youngest son of Mr L. T. Becroft, of Port Albert, and nephew of Mr A. Becroft of this town, died from typhoid fever at the Mangonui Hospital the week before last. When all hope of the young fellow's recovery was given up, the parents traveled all the way to Mangonui, and were with their son till the last. Deceased, who was one of the Wireless Guard at the Awanui Station, was a general favourite with his comrades. He was interred at St. Andrew's cemetery a squad of his brother Territorials being in attendance.
