The Austro-German advance in Southern Galicia has been checked £'■? the re-inforced Russians^>Desperate fighting lias tak^n^place with the temperature^at 20a1 eg. below zero. A strong offensive movement is being made by the Germans in East Prussia. The numerical superiority of the Germans is compelling the Russian invaders to fall back on strong positions across their own border. The Russians claim further successes agaiust the Germans in the Carpathian passes. The Belgians are endeavouring to raise an army of 300,000. Young men are flocking to the colours. Urgent appeals are being made to refugees in Holland and Britain for between and 30,000 volunteers, ' otherwise compulsory military service will be decreed by the Belgian Government. In the Pont a Mousson district of Lorraine the Germans ocr cupied Norroy, and gained a footing on the adjacent heights. —^ A counter-attack was delivered and fighting is proceeding. Egypt remains tranquil, and the behaviour of the natives is good.
