WEDNESDAY
A sharp engagement was fought at Guinchy, Northern France, on Sunday morning. The British swarmed into a German trench and asserted their superiority in hand -to - hand fighting. The financial arrangements made by the allies include advances to Russia and support for the smaller States. A significant portion of Mr Lloyd George's speech in the House of Commons was that in which he said there were other States preparing for war and it was " obviously in our interests that they should be well equipped." The German public have been warned not to expect a sudden coup on the 18th. The"American Note conveys a stern warning of what the consequences may be if German submarines destroy American vessels without first ascertaining their nationality. Mr Winston Churchill, speaking in the House of Commons, foreshadowed reprisals, and said the full force of British naval ■ pressure would be applied to the enemy.
