WAITEMATA COUNTY

APPOINTMENT OF BRIDGE OVERSEER, AT the recent meeting of the Waitemata County Council, held in Auckland, Mr F. Dye presided and there were also present:— Messrs J. O'Neill, A. Cochrance, H. Day, W. Oliphant, R. T. Graham, V. Kerr-Taylor, F. Poynton, W. McCathie, and A. M. Laing. The engineer,- Mr G. Jackson, reported that he had received 41 applications for the position of overseer for the Helensville bridge. He had been informed that the Public Works Depart* ment had selected Wm. Vause for the position,

In regard to the Rodney CountyCouncil's proposal to move the present swing bridge over the Puhoi River about a mile up the stream, the engineer explained that the proposed alteration would lengthen the main East Coast Road to the north by about two miles,, and the only reason for so doing was to avoid opening the bridge twice a week td allow steamers to pass through. Objections were raised to interfering with the proposals of an adjoining County Council, and it was also stated that this was a case calling for the earnest consideration of the Council before coming to a decision. The Council decided to reply to the effect that it disapproved of the proposal.
