MONDAY

Twelve German aeroplanes attacked Dunkirk, on the French coast, near the Belgium frontier, dropping 80 bombs. Seven persons were killed and twelve injured. The damage to property was slight, but included the destruction of the United States Consulate. The attackers were driven off and pursued by British French, and Belgian aviators. One of the German aeroplanes was brought on Belgian territory by a^ British aeroplane. The allies' aviators dropped bombs on Zeebrugee, damaging a submarine and causing some casualties. A French airman dropped several bombs on Bruges. The Germans are displaying increased activity in the western theatre of war, notably southeast of Ypres. An attempted rush upon the French lines at Albert during a snow storm, and a stupendous effort to pierce the British lines near St Omer, were repulsed with heavy losses. Fierce hand-to-hand struggles have taken place in Alsace. The Germans have bombarded Nieuport with great violence. In the eastern theatre the Russian linas from the Lower Vistula to Chorzele are in close contact with the enemy, andserious skirmishes have taken place.
