SATURDAY

The allies have held ' their position in the village of St. Georges in spite of a terrific bombardment, during which the Germans fired 4000 shells, smashing the village. In the Ypres district the allies blew up forts occupied by 140 Germans. Seventy were buried in the ruins and the others wiped out by the allied artillery. The news from France records progress in Alsace, in the Argonne, and at various other points. Important progress has been made in the Woevre region and at Lille a violent German attack was repulsed and lost trenches recaptured. A report from Milan says the Russians are preparing a burst into Transylvania, and that there is consternation in political circles in Buda Pest on account of the possibility of Hungary breaking away from Austria and' becoming an independent State."
