MONDAY

The war news records considerable allied progress on the Aisne, from Soissons to Argonne. Three lines of German trenches were captured, and the Germans, failing in repeated efforts to recapture them, bombarded Soissons, setting fire to the law courts. At other points material progress was made, and considerable losses were inflicted on the enemy from Rheims to the Argonne. The German forces in Alsace have been reinforced, and have their gained ground, though at heavy cost. Fighting in Poland continues. It is undoubted that the Germans have suffered terrific losses all along the eastern battle front. One night's abortive fighting is stated to have cost them 30,000 dead and three times as many wounded. A movement of German troops from the eastern to the western front indicates that Germany's military plans for the immediate future necessitate the reinforcement of the armies fighting in Belgium and France.
