POOR OLD DARGAVILLE
WITH DRY TANKS
TWENTY SHILLINGS EACH
TO FILL
A MOURNFUL message from.the Northern Wairoa states : " The borough of Dargaville is in a piteous plight through lack of water. Whilst up-to-date in the matter of municipal gasworks, the greater essential of an adequate water supply has been scandalously neglected. Years ago a scheme was under consideration, and as far back as the early months of 1913 the ratepayers, by -an overwhelming majority, sanctioned a huge loan for the purpose, but the work has not even been commenced, and will not until next February. In the meantime the people have to buy water at the rate of 15/ to £1 per 400 gallons. Baths are too expensive a luxury to dream of, and the continual sacrifices in other directions are exceedingly trying. At one large boarding establishment, with accommodation for fifty people, there are 28 water tanks, and 25 of them are as dry as the proverbial bone. v
