Sfer' Russian reports claim successes in Poland and at Czenstochowa, near the frontier of Silesia, the Germans being driven back at both points. In Poland many Germans were caught in wire entanglements placed in a river-bed, and numbers of them were drowned under the hoofs of their maddened horses. Three thousand dead and wounded were abandoned by the Germans at Piever, north of Kutno. In Belgian and France the fighting has developed into artillery duels. iThe superior artillery of the allies has prevented the Germans from completing their new trenches on the Aisne, and has destroyed the German trenches in the Argonne district. The Prussian Guards, composed of the picked fighting men of Germany, has suffered so severely in its numerous attacks on the British, that it has been withdrawn from the battle-line and sent to the rear to recuperate. The Russians have successfully bombarded Chorok, a Turkish port on the Black Sea, and have defeated the Turks in the direction of Erzerum.
