THURSDAY

The latest war cablegrams state that the Germans are still bringing reinforcements to Belgium, and that the British in many positions are outnumbered by ten to one. The enormous strength of the available German forces is creating a great impression in Great Britain. At Messines, south of lYpres, there has been fierce hand-to-hand fighting, in which the Scots Guards and Scots Grey suffered severely, but held their ground magnificently, and finally forced a superior body of Germans babk. The destruction of the Emden by the Australian cruiser Sydney resulted from a systematic plan of tracking the roving German cruisers. The Eastern Extension Cable Company's station on Direction Island, in the Cocos Group, was apparently left unprotected, but when the Emden landed a party to destroy the telegraph instruments, the Sydney was called by wireless. In the engagement which followed the Sydney suffered only trifling damage. Three of her men were killed and 15 wounded. About 200 of the Emden's crew were killed and 30 wounded. The Konigsberg, another of the German raiding cruisers, has been caught hiding in a shallow river in German territory near Zanzibar.' The British cruiser Chatham, which discovered the hiding-place, was unable to follow the German cruiser into the shallow water, but she locked the Konigsberg in the river and bombarded her. Effective steps are being taken "to capture and destroy the Konigsberg.
