rl!he destructive career of. the Q-ermari cruiser Emden has been plosed. She was met and engaged by the cruiser Sydney, of the Australian Fleet, off Cocos islands. The result is announced vn''a wireless message received
by the Australian Minister for Defence from the commander of the China Squadron, which states that after the engagement with the Sydney the Emden ran ashore a complete wreck. A New York cablegram reports that a British squadron has been seen heading towards Panama Canal. It 'is believed the squadron was bound for South American waters. Severe fighting continues in Belgium, and there has been a renewal of activity in the Aisne Valley. It is stated that 50,000 Germans were killed last week during the fighting on the Yser. Earl Kitchener states that there are now 1,250,000 men in training in Great Britain, in addition to troops from Overseas Dominions. He appeals for "more men and still more, until the enemy is crushed," A Belgium column has entered Rhodesia from the Belgian Congo to assist the British against attacks from German East Africa.
