After successfully resisting all the- German efforts to advance' upon Calais, the allies have now assumed' the offensive alqng almost the entire front in. West-: erri Belgium. A. notable advance has been made in the vicinity of Messines, south of Ypres, where the British have been lately engaged. The British have made slight progress around Armentieres, to the west of Lille. Attacks by the enemy between Laßassee and Arras have been repulsed.' In the Aisne Valley the/ allies continue to advance steadily, Inforniatiun. that a battle is pending between the Japanese and German Pacific fleets is reported at Tqkio to have been received by the Japanese Admiralty. American naval authorities believe that only part of the stpry of the naval ei}gagemeut off Valparaiso has been told, German silence as to the where* abouts of the twe German cruisers, Leipsig and Bremen, has aroused their suspicions, and they think it probable that the German losses will be found to have been heavier than has been indicated up to the present.
