ANOTHER POLICE INQUIRY
Notwithstanding the fact that : . Detective Hollis was down here a fortnight ago to inquire into certain charges made by certain Justices of the Peace against the character of the local Constable and Clerk of the Court, inasmuch that he had lost tbj§ confidence of the . public ■ Superintendent Kieley, in charge of the Auckland Police District, came down here on Monday, and started straightway upon another inquiry, upon the requisition of Messrs Jas. McLeod and W. R. Fosbroke (so we understand), the former inquiry not being satisfactosy. The inquiry started at 10.30 a.m in the Helensville Court House, and lasted two whole days. It was apparently " open to all and influenced by none," but our representative discovered m due course that the proceedines^^Bßp^ - • - not open to the Pressr^j»w JJie left. However, before that 'left" he reports (whether in or out of Court we know not) that the whole bone of contention runs: —Mr Jas McLeod was of the opinion that Police Constable Driscoll made a huge mistake in bringing his son before the Beak on a charge of using obscene language, etc., upon a certain evening now gone by. The lad got off; a justice says he should never have been charged, while the lawyer for the prosecution says different. However, this is neither here nor there, so far as this paper is concerned, suffice to say the whole thing appears to our unsophisticated mind, when all is ended, " thepublic will be of the same opinion still."
