NOTES ON THE GAME

[BY DROP KICK] As the season has opened with the Cup matches it is my intention to write up a few remarks on the game, and endeavour to point out the players' mistakes. The opening match, 'Helensville v. Waimauku, was for senior football very poor, the players on both sides having a tendency to play the man instead of the ball, a fault which if not rectified by the referee will kill the sport quickly. Helensville on their play should with practice defeat "Waimauku on the next occasion, and if the players have the sport at heart they should train. It is a bit early to criticise individually, but I would like to mention that some of the players are a little inclined to talk instead of working. Several new player 3 donned the jersey for both teams, and in a week or so I expect some good football from the new blood. Referee McLeod did his best, but I would suggest to him to be more strict on off side play. To-morrow. Parakai, last year's champions, try out Helensville, and, given a good day, I hope to see a large attendance, especially of ladies, who are always welcome. " Drop. Kick " will answer all disputes on Rugby if addressed to the ECHO each week.
