FIRST CUP MATCH

HELENSVILLE v. WAIMAUKU

THE opening of the football season and the first Cup match was played on the Show Ground on Saturday last, the 23rd inst. The climatic conditions were most favourable and the ground was in good order.

The match was Helensville v Waimauku, and considering it was the first match of the season the play very fair.

Up to half-time the game was very even, and no score was registered on either side. The players prominent for Waimauku were the half-back and Fulton. For Helensville V. McLeod at Y% played a very safe game, whilst in the vanguard Masters was prominent. On resuming after half-time play was still very even, but for an infringement by Helensville Waimauku was given a shot at goal which was taken by Fletcher who, with a good kick, placed the leather between the goal posts. On changing round for the.fourth spell, Helensville team livened up for a short time, but was soon defending again ; with the ball at toe the Waimauku forwards broke right through the defence, and things looked like a second score for Waimauku, when White ran back and snapped up the ball from between the posts and found the line near the 25 flag. Shortly after this the whistle sounded for time, with the scores as follows : Waimauku ... 3 Helensville ... 0 Mr Logan McLeod acted as referee, and his decisions gave satisfaction to both sides.
