TOWN BOARD.
The Town Board met on Saturday ; present —Oomrs Jas. McLeod (chairman), A Becroffc, .T. A. Wilson, and Jas t Hand. Deputation. Messrs C. H. Spinley and E. S. Masters attended as a deputation in regard to the question of the Board taking control of the Librarj'. Mr Spinley pointed out that the Board had replied to the previous deputation to the effect, that the matter had been shelved'for twelve months, but he had seen by newspaper reports that the motion dealing with same had been rescinded. If the Board did not in* tend to do anything in the matter he would ask for a subsidy same as was given last year. The Chairman said that what Mr Spinley had stated was correct. At that time he had moved that the Board take over the Library. He would lather the question had come up at a full meeting (Messrs Becroft and Stewart not having arrived), but members should have been present. He was still of the opinion that the Board should take over the Library and all the ratepayers he had spoken to on the matter were of the same opinion. He thought it was quite right to have it improved. The Chairman moved that the Clerk write to the Trustees stating that the Board were prepared to take control. He was sure the institution would get far more support if taken in hand and looked after properly. Mr Hand seconded. Mr Spinley outlined the course that could be followed in electing a Committee from the subscribers and the Board, and suggested that the Board intimate what would be done in regard to maintenance. The motion was carried. Lamp at South Station. Mrs McEwin wrote pointing out that the erection of a lamp on the railway gate would be a great convenience to the public on dark nights. If the Board decided to have one erected she would have same supplied with kerosene and kept m order. After discussion it was decided to have a lamp placed on the gate. General. Mr F. L. Oubitt's application for a building permit was granted. Mr J. W. Blackmars, engineer, forwarded particulars in reference to the installation of coal gas.—The Board did not consider the time opportune to discuss the matter. On Mr Becroft's recommendation it was decided to have the -large gates at the cemetery locked sq as to keep out • stray horses and cattle.—lt was further decided to have some clearing up work done at the cemetery by the Board's surfacemen. The reports of members in refer ence to the Hatawheri bridge were not in agreement and it was agreed to visit the locality after the present meeting. The Board decided to meet on Thursday, 18th inst, to revise the bylaws. The Clerk was instructed by resolution to write to "Waiteinata County Council asking that th« road from Mr Hand's gate to Mangakura creek be nut in order. A statomont of finance showed the overdraft on general a/c at £273. The drainage a/c was £12 4a 5d in cre'lit. The Domain Board's a/c was overdrawn £51 16s Id.
