Value of Cow-testing.
A summary of the work done under the Kaupokonui Cow-testing- Association is given by the Eginont Star, which shows the following results :—
The number of cows tested during the season 1910-11 'was 1454. averaging 222,02 lbs, butter-fat; 1911 to 1912, 2438, averaging 235.72 lbs. butter^fat for the two seasons was therefore 13.70 lbs. per cow.
Calculating the increase on 2897 cows tested during the past teason, represents 39.688 lbs. butter-fat, or in round figures £2000 worth of produce, Calculating the increase on the whole number of cows supplying this com-, pany—:namely, 11.494, it would repi'esent an increase of 157,467 lbs. butter* fat, or £7873 worth of produce.
The highest h^rd average for last season was 399.81 lbs. butter-fat at Is per lb,-£2O. The lowest herd average was 153.92 lbs, butter-fat value £7 14s.
Assuming the cost vf production as £7 10s per cow, the highest herd shows profit of £12 10s per ""cow, while the lowest herd shows a profit of 4s per cow. The profit on one of the highest herd shows a profit of 4s per cow. The profit on one cow of the highest herd is equal to the profit on 62^- of Ihe lowest herd. The herds of" individual members, show more remarkable increases, and the following are herds which were tested during the season 1910 to 1911, and again in 1912 to 1913, with the increases : The increase of butternut per cow for the two seasons was as high as 78 lb in one herd 77 iv another" and 53 and 51 in other herds. The lowest herd increase was 15.10 lb butter-fat per cow.
